Saanio & Riekkola is an independent and private consulting company and a member of The Finnish Association of Consulting Firms (SKOL). The company specialises in the design of underground construction projects and technology for the disposal of radioactive waste. There are around 55 members of staff working for the company and the annual turnover is EUR 6 million.

Saanio & Riekkola Oy’s head office is located in Helsinki, and the majority of the company’s activities take place in Finland. The city centre service tunnel in Helsinki and the spent nuclear fuel repository in Olkiluoto provide examples of underground construction projects that have benefited from Saanio & Riekkola Oy’s specialist expertise.

The company’s design services have also been exported to Sweden and South Korea. In Sweden, Saanio & Riekkola Oy has developed designs for nuclear waste repositories and performed rock mechanical analyses. Saanio & Riekkola Oy established a permanent office in Seoul (S&R Korea) in 2008. To date, projects in South Korea have involved the design of metro lines and nuclear waste repositories.
